19 Small Town Summers by blueLudebar 19 Small Town Summers by blueLudebar
One-page comic, crow quill and microns + Photoshop. It’s come full circle! This was inspired by text posts on Tumblr in the #small town tag. To everyone feeling suffocated by where you are, and getting an impulse to leave and seek something better—this one’s for you.

(Please full view! There’s tonnns of detail in these tiny panels.)

This describes me exactly, except I'm not trapped by where I am, I've become tangled up in what others expect of me and what people want to make of me. It's truly amazing how one can get so many emotions from your art... It's taken me this long but maybe I'll find something better.

Wow okay so I actually teared up a little bit reading this. :'D This is basically what I've been feeling for months now. Like any time I think too hard on it I feel like I can feel walls closing in on me. I'd pack my crap and go somewhere, anywhere, tomorrow if I had a way to do it.

Just feeling restless with nothing I can do to fix it. :I

Very glad this could speak to you, though I'm sorry to hear that. Feeling trapped is awful. But even worse is getting used to it--so I'd say, don't give up! It's not easy, but keep going, never know when a chance at something better will come your way.

Yep, I'm saving up what money I can from my job for a travel fund, and I'm thinking of looking at grad schools out of country to see what's out there. *u*

But yes. That all being said this comic is beautiful. <3

Having moved to college this year from a small town myself, I really love this page - the feelings it evokes, the detail of the artwork, and the design of the typography.

good use of two colours (and the white background) to convey all the details, but also that dead flat heat of a small town summer.

those last panels are both masterful and very indicative of your comics style. :)

Using just two's definitely a challenge, thanks!

Buh, awesome of you to say, thanks again. :D I'm curious, what makes you say that? Like, the shape of the panels or etc.

im not sure... i think its the neat and ordered panels that suddenly give way to a sliding curved panel that helps push the story (and the reader) into a different perspective on the story... I think you like throwing curve balls at the reader and the panels reflect that.

Whoaa. The second half panels were laid out to lead up to the last 'reveal' moment, but I wouldn't have connected that curveball approach to my comic work as a whole on my own. That's super insightful of you, thanks. ;;

As always, I love how you mix poetic language with images that say more than most text ever could. Beautiful job.

Ah thank you so much, as this one's a bit text-heavy I tried to make sure it wouldn't overwhelm the images.

I think you did a great job of balancing the two elements. Out of curiosity, the artist's description mentions you were inspired by posts on tumblr--did you write the text yourself? I'm a writer so I'm always interested in the process. :)

Yep, wrote it meself. Process...a while back I thought about doing an abstract story having to do with impulse as a fishhook (while watching recordings of Picasso painting, oddly enough), but it didn't go anywhere.

More recently I was scrolling through tumblr photos of small town houses to practice painting, but couldn't help noticing lots of people wanting to escape, start over, etc. I'm a sucker for nostalgia and reinvention themes so their stories just kinda stuck in my head aaaand this happened! /longwinded
